This is called Shock Trials for the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 (Nimitz Class). Not all ships go through this, normally one ship of the class. The Roosevelt was the first of the Nimitz class to be built modularly and needed to be tested for it's ability to handle near misses.
